Who Owns Australia’s Farms 2023: Australia’s biggest landholders – the full list
Billions of dollars are invested in Australian farmland — meet the biggest players and discover the 1300-plus properties they own.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a billionaire Swedish Count, one of King Charles’ best mates and the nation’s leading legal eagle are among those vying for a slice of Australia’s farms.
An investigation by The Weekly Times into Who Owns Australia’s Farms can reveal five of the richest landholders in the nation control more than 73,800 square kilometres of farmland – an area bigger than Ireland.
The revelation comes amid growing demand for farmland from global billionaires and funds as well as from domestic families and farming companies with fists full of cash following successive years of record rural commodity returns and improved seasonal conditions.
Heading the list of the major investors is PSP Investments – the pension fund for Canada’s public service including its world-famous mounted police force – which has spent about $6 billion on Australian land and water assets.
Its portfolio of almost includes more than 90 grain farms in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and Victoria, 50-plus dairy farms in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, 20 orchards and vineyards and 204,000 square kilometres of sheep and cattle country.
With about $3 billion worth of assets, the second-biggest investor, the Australian-managed Macquarie Agriculture funds, own 44,603 square kilometres, including the controversial Cubbie Station – Australia’s biggest cotton farm – at Dirrinbandi in Queensland.
Other major investors include American teacher pension fund TIAA – which operates more than 60 cropping properties in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia worth about $2.2 billion, the Hong Kong Exchange-listed CK Life Sciences ($1.5 billion of farmland) and the ASX-listed Rural Funds Group ($1.5 billion of farmland).
From an area perspective, the biggest landholders are Crown Point Pastoral Company, owned by two mates in the Northern Territory with 92,000 square kilometres, followed by the ASX-listed Australian Agricultural Company (66,000 square kilometres), the MacLachlan family of Jumbuck Pastoral Company (52,000 square kilometres), and the South Australian operated Williams Cattle Company (47,000 square kilometres).
A sell-off of properties by billionaire Gina Rinehart – once Australia’s biggest landholder – has seen her slip down the list to just 35,000 square kilometres.
Here is a list of some of our biggest landholders and the 1300-plus properties they own.
