SHAUN the sheep has had his first ever haircut at the ripe old aged of six.

The Merino was found at the weekend wandering through a tree plantation near Stonehenge in Tasmania with more than 20kg of wool on his body.

.

New owners Peter and Netty Hazell hoped Shaun’s fleece would break the 27kg record fleece shorn from a sheep, Shrek, in New Zealand in 2004.

But, Shaun’s wool weighed in just under — at 23.5kg.

Shearer Jack Monks was chosen for the big job, and Ms Hazel told NewsCorp Australia that the sheep was a good client.

“For a sheep that had never been shorn before he was really well behaved,” she said. “He didn’t kick or anything, he just laid there and let it happen.”

Over the coming days the Hazells will keep a coat onside to drape over the animal while he gets used to his breezy haircut.

.

Meanwhile, more of Shaun’s story has come out in the days following his rescue. The sheep disappeared from his original owner’s property six years ago during a fire and is thought to have been wandering around the bush ever since.

What a load: Shaun’s new owner Netty Hazell, left, and shearer Jack Monks, of Liffey, check the fleece.
