HEREFORDS Australia has upped the ante in its jostle for breed market share by appointing a key Meat and Livestock Australia staffer as its new boss.

Last week, The Weekly Times reported former MLA chief marketing officer Lisa Sharp was set to provide advice to the organisation.

On Monday this week, her role with Herefords Australia was stepped up with her appointment as chief executive officer, replacing Andrew Donoghue who tended his resignation in mid-January.

The board wasted no time in filling his role, with less than a month between Mr Donoghue’s resignation and Ms Sharp’s appointment.

In a letter to members yesterday, the board said Ms Sharp’s appointment “acknowledges the important of both marketing and research and development to members”.

“As the industry starts to rebuild, now is the time to promote the benefits of Herefords to commercial producers and other value-chain participants,” the letter said.

“Now is also the time to further promote the productivity and profitability advantages of the breed and drive adoption of research outcomes.

“Lisa’s tenure at MLA has given her a detailed end-to-end perspective of the breed value chain.

“It will help Herefords Australia strengthen its connection with members, R & D providers and other industry participants, and will greatly enable achievement of our short and long-term growth objectives.”

Ms Sharp spent five years with MLA and held senior positions with a number of global food companies including a senior brand manager with Coca Cola Amatil and three years as the general manager of marketing with SPC/Ardmona. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and holds a degree in economics.

The appointment of Ms Sharp is the latest in a revamp of the organisation, with several new board members elected last May including Ian Durkin, Sam Becker, Marc Greening and Mark Duthie.

Meanwhile Hereford Australia has announced its national sale will go ahead this May 12-13 but in another new initiative, the sale will be interfaced with Auctionsplus.
