Mawarra Genetics branching out

For many producers, it’s a choice between Hereford or Angus cattle. But one iconic stud is embracing both in a bid to provide the best genetics for clients.

BREEDERS of some of Victoria’s best-known Herefords, the family behind the Mawarra prefix, are diversifying their stud by branching out into Angus cattle.

But instead of turning away from polled Herefords and Herefords entirely, the Sykes family are incorporating an Angus herd into their business, and have rebranded as Mawarra Genetics.

It’s a move stud principal Deanne Skyes said is key to satisfying all their client needs.

“We identified an opportunity in Gippsland, and we’ve always been interested in providing the cattle that our clients are looking for,” Mrs Sykes said.

“About 20 years ago we introduced polled Herefords to the traditional horned Herefords we had. The Angus is another step in that direction.’’

Deanne and husband Peter will offer 26 Angus bulls at their March 22 autumn bull sale at Longford, along with 91 polled Hereford and Hereford bulls.

It will be the first time Angus cattle will be sold under the Mawarra Genetics prefix.

“It’s been a really exciting development for us,” Mrs Sykes said.

“It’s the same philosophy for breeding as what we have for the Herefords. It’s based on really strong female foundations, then using proven sires so we can build that breeding herd base.”

Mrs Sykes said Angus cattle were sourced from a number of studs in 2018, including Yancowinna, Witherwood, and Anvil Angus.
