COMMISSION buyers dominated at the special blue ribbon sale at Yea today where buyers said prices were up $200 on what they had expected to pay.

Overall the yarding of 3439 weaner steers and heifers averaged $1766.

The steers averaged $1832 and the heifers trailed not too far behind with an average price of $1647.

Heavier steers weighing 390kg-430kg made 470c/kg-490c/kg while steers from 300kg to 380kg returned from 500c/kg to 540c/kg.

Tania and Ed Moorhead from the NSW Northern Tablelands picked up 260 heifers across the sale at an average of $1660.

The Moorhead family, who are restocking after years of drought and have spent the week frequenting the Victorian weaner sales, said the market was one of the most expensive they’ve ever seen.

“It’s been a really good season for about 12 months, but prior to that it was like a desert for 18 months,” Mr Moorhead said.

“We had hoped to pick up heifers for about $1400 today so we were probably about $200 over what we budgeted for.”

The sale started off with a bang with Boxhill Pastoral’s pen of 20 Angus steers at 458kg topping the sale first up selling for $2240 or 489c/kg.
