Restocker demand prompts additional Riddellvue Angus autumn sale

Interest from Hay in NSW to Colac in Victoria’s Western District has prompted an Alexandra Angus producer to run his first-ever autumn bull sale.

THE mad scramble for restocker cattle following years of drought on the east coast has resulted in one Angus producer adding a second bull sale to their annual calendar of events.

Riddellvue Angus at Alexandra will offer 35 bulls at the first autumn bull sale for the property, with a focus on female producers.

Riddellvue stud principal Ian Bates said it was purely the ongoing demand for cattle which led him to add an autumn sale.

Clients from as far north as Hay in NSW, down as far as Colac in the Western District, have expressed interest in the inaugural autumn sale, Mr Bates said.

“I run and autumn and spring herd, and I do have some yearling bull in this sale,” Mr Bates said.

Two sires with progeny will be available at the sale, who Mr Bates said are both excellent female producers.

Barnnaby Reality K63 PB, son of renowned sire Matauri Reality 839, and Te Mania Melfon, son of Te Mania Kirk, will be available for purchase, along with a number of heifer bulls.

Mr Bates said he had high hopes for the success of the sale, as autumn sales in the Alexandra region traditional dare well.

“We’re hoping this sale is a bit stronger than our spring sale. And that’s down to the way of the industry at the moment, everyone is restocking females, and keeping heifers,” Mr Bates said.

“There’s quite a bit of interested in that, and people are getting great money from their heifer bulls. I push the female traits … your breeding program is based around your female herd, and your bulls are the bonus.”

At the Riddellvue spring bull sale in 2020, the top priced bull sold for $9000, with the average price across the sale $5809.

The sale will be interfaced with AuctionsPlus, a decision Mr Bates said was viable given the increased confidence in producers using online platforms to buy cattle since the outbreak of COVID-19 first forced people out of saleyards and online.

“Everyone is used to what’s going on, everyone is aware, and I think the attendance will be a lot higher,” Mr Bates said.

The Riddellvue Angus autumn bull sale will be held on property March 10 2021 from 1pm.
