CORONAVIRUS and border closures failed to take the shine off yesterday’s Texas Angus bull sale, where the top priced bull fetched more than $100,000.

Texas Angus stud principals Ben and Wendy Mayne sold all 155 bulls offered at the sale for 100 per cent clearance rate, with bulls averaging $1452 and making a gross return of $2.17 million.

Texas Powerplay P626 was bought by a syndicate at Kelly’s Angus at Yea in Victoria for a staggering $108,000, the highest price ever recorded at a Texas Angus sale.

“Our highest price before that was $56,000 back in 2017,” Mrs Mayne said.

“People were gobsmacked, it was a bit surreal.”

The son of Powerplay has a carcass weight of +92, weighed 1012kg, and was in the top 1 per cent of his breed for 200 and 600 day weight gain.

Mr Mayne said for a season that has swung “from one extreme to another”, the stellar results were incredible.

“It was only back in January and February we were looking at each other, wondering how long we could do this for,” Mr Mayne said.

“We were feeding every animal on the place, it was sheer desperation, we were even running out of feed to buy. Then it started raining, the cattle responded really well.”

Border closures due to coronavirus restrictions did disrupt the sale, with a number of regular buyers unable to attend the on-farm sale.

“Within 48 hours before the sale, about 50 people plus pulled out from coming,” Mr Mayne said.

“There were a lot of people concerned about crossing the border.”

Regular buyers from Queensland were in attendance at the sale, while repeat buyers from Western Australia and Victoria participated online.

Both the top selling bull and second priced bull were purchased online.

“That shows a fair bit of confidence in us,” Mrs Mayne said.
