RESTOCKERS took advantage of lower prices at the second South Eastern Livestock Exchange store cattle sale at Yass in NSW last week.

With about 1600 cattle yarded, there were about 400 more than initially advertised.

Landmark Goulburn, NSW, livestock manager Samuel Hunter said the quality cattle sold to similar rates as last sale, but the secondary pens were cheaper.

“Breeding cattle were as dear as last sale,” Mr Hunter said.

“Local restockers made up most of the buyers, with a few small commission orders.”

Steers sold from $700 to $1340, with most selling from 365c/kg to 440c/kg and averaging $1048, while unjoined heifers topped at $1180, selling at 328c/kg to 375c/kg and averaged $893.

The top pen of steers was 18 Angus, 10-12 months, Rennylea blood sold by KR Reed from Goulburn, NSW, for $1340.

A run of 155 Poll Hereford steers, Wirruna blood and yard weaned was sold by Mylora Pastoral, from Binalong, NSW, with the tops making $1150 and averaging $994, or 396c/kg to 415c/kg.

Mylora also sold 150 Poll Hereford heifers for a top of $930 and an average of $858, or 355c/kg to 375c/kg.

Angus Graham said they were trade cattle. “We didn’t really know what to expect price wise,” Mr Graham said.

The 320 cows and calves sold to a top of $2600, with most bringing $1600 to $1850.

M Hughes, from Batlow, NSW, sold 13 Angus cows, first calvers, and 13 four to six-month-old calves for the top price of $2600.

The few pens of unjoined cows made $630 to $1160.

Elders livestock agent Oliver Mason, Goulburn, said the market was strong and the quality of cattle was good.

“There is a lot of grass around, so I think numbers will continue to be seasonal based,” Mr Mason said.
