Steers shine at Ballarat store sale
Prices for heifers softened compared to recent weeks at today’s store cattle sale at Ballarat. Jenny Kelly reports.
STRONG price trends continued for young weaner steers at Ballarat today.
But prices for heifers did drop lower.
The biggest grown Angus steers above 500kg sold to $2050, with feedlots to main driver of price due to limited inquiry from South Gippsland restockers at the sale.
Most heavy steers sold $1400-$1850, trending well over 400c/kg.
The surprise of the sale was a lift in money for well bred weaner steers.
H F Richardson and Co livestock agent Bernie Nevins quoted livestock prices for steer calves as 20-30c dearer on a month ago.
“It was very strong for good young calves,” Mr Nevins said.
Mr Nevins said the best lines of Angus made returns of 430-460c/kg.
That pushed most sales between $1215-$150 for the 2500-strong yarding.
In comparison, agents said heifer calves were quoted 10-15c softer than previous sales, but were still buoyant at the sale.
“What it has really done today is realigned itself,” Mr Nevins said.
“Most well bred heifers made over $1000, at 380c/kg.”
