PRICES held at Wodonga’s store cattle sale today despite numbers swelling to 3600.

Despite advertising an offering of 2500 cattle, more stock were brought in to sell as seasonal conditions and the heat encouraged vendors to sell.

And the market held up, despite the mixed quality of the offering and the lack of rain in most districts.

The best cows and calves made $2000, older steers sold to $1395 while heavy heifers reached $1170.

The top price of the day was paid for Mundoora Farming’s line of 18 Angus heifers, two years, 509kg, with calves, which sold for $2000.

It was the highlight in an otherwise small offering of cows and calves, which mainly sold for $945-$1040.

Older steers reached $1395, paid for a pen of Charolais-cross, zero and two teeth and weighing 483kg, which worked out at 289c/kg.

Other older steers returned 268-324c/kg.

There was good interest in the best of the younger, weaner-type steers, which sold to $1260 for a pen of 377kg Angus (334c/kg) sold by Stewart Scott Nominees from Tocumwal, NSW.

Other weaner and yearling steers sold for 320-345c/kg with odd sales above and below this.

The feature of the offering was a line of nine-to-10-month-old Hereford calves sold by Tarabah Pastoral Company, Morundah, with almost 700 offered.

The top pen of 20 made $1015 (332c/kg) with the next 113 making $976 or 359c/kg.

The balance sold from $708-$875, returning 342-367c/kg.

Vendor Michael Coghlan said the returns were good, but especially for the heavier end of the steers.

“We are happy with these kinds of prices,” he said.

Greg McNamara from Elders Finley bought 150 steers throughout the market and said the market was “reasonably solid”.

“I’ve bought cattle to be backgrounded and generally I am pretty happy with the prices.”

The top heifer price of $1170 was paid for a pen of 11 Angus weighing 408kg, which returned 287c/kg.

Other heifers sold mainly from 265-300c/kg.

That included the sale of 24 Hereford heifers, 294kg, which sold for $865 or 302c/kg.

Feedlot buyers were active, as were processors and commission buyers.
