MURRINDINDI Shire Council has purchased a small parcel of land next to the Yea saleyards in order to start work on an upgrade to the facility in July.

Murridindi Shire Council mayor Margaret Rae said the land would be used to “future-proof the facility” by allowing further expansion as well as controlling current traffic hazards.

The facility was selected to receive funding worth $363,000 from the Federal Government for stage two of the National Stronger Regions Fund which was matched by the council.

The funding will also go towards installing stock scales, a height-adjustable loading ramp, 36 new roofed holding pens and a roof on an existing hospital pen.

It will be the second upgrade to the facility in four years as part of the funding program.

Stage one was completed in 2012 and included the installation of a roof over the existing selling pens.

Cr Rae said the upgrade would be an investment in the $50 million local beef cattle industry, which was the largest livestock industry sector in the shire.

“Council is certain this investment will pay dividends for economic development within the shire by enabling expansion and improvements to the saleyards that will help the shire grow and prosper,” she said.

Cr Rae said the council was also trying to “resolve ongoing mobile phone black spot issues” at the site.
