Timboon Ice Cream enjoys anniversary success with headline flavours

Timboon Ice Cream launched three flavours this year with connections to 2020 headlines. The new options were a runaway success.

A TRIO of topically-named ice cream flavours have been lapped up by Australians looking for sweet sustenance in bitter times.

To celebrate their 21st anniversary in October, Timboon Ice Cream launched three flavours with connections to 2020 headlines.

A bitter orange marmalade ice cream was named ‘Karen from Brighton’ — after a Melburnian who shot to fame after complaining about coronavirus restrictions on a television news bulletin.

The coronavirus-linked rise in home baking inspired a caramelised sourdough flavour folded through vanilla called ‘Same Same, but Sourdough’ while a Grampians Estate Shiraz vanilla swirl was entitled ‘The Tipsy’.

Timboon Ice Cream founder Tim Marwood said the comically titled flavours gained a lot of attention in a year that people were looking for a sweet distraction.

“We’re always looking to include new flavours and with all the news this year, we thought it was a good way to celebrate 21 years,” he told The Weekly Times.

“The ‘Karen from Brighton’ and the sourdough themes gave people a laugh. All three sold really quickly — the reaction was fantastic.”

The way Australians consume ice cream shifted markedly in 2020 due to coronavirus restrictions. Timboon enjoyed a 120 per cent rise in grocery store sales year-on-year.

“Of course, there were no events, so people were eating more at home,” Mr Marwood said. “That’s obviously behind the increase in grocery sales. We have five mobile ice cream vans that couldn’t go anywhere this year but now with summer here, hopefully things will be different next year.”
