Singapore company Sophie’s Bionutrients makes first algae-based milk

Almond, soy and oat substitutes for milk have been in the supermarket for years. Now a Singapore company has come up with a new alternative.

So long soy and oat is old news. The new milk substitute aimed at consumers who loathe lactose is made with algae.

Singapore-based food technology company Sophie’s Bionutrients has developed the first-ever microalgae-based milk.

The new product is made with microalgae protein flour, which the company claims contains the same essential amino acids as microalgae itself. The flour is then homogenised with water to create the dairy-free product.

In a statement confirming the creation, Sophie’s Bionutrients co-founder Eugene Wang claimed the water-soluble microalgae flour can be further refined to mimic the creamy texture of dairy.

“We believe in harnessing the power of nature to build a sustainable, greener future through environment-friendly alternate food solutions,” he said.

“We believe that micro-algae is the best place to help us achieve this.

“It is the superfood of the future. Through further refinement with food and beverage producing partners developments like this one, the world’s first allergen-free micro-algae milk, we believe we can transform the way we live, produce and consume food for the better.”

The Singapore company is yet to confirm when the algae-based milk will be available on supermarket shelves.

Sophie’s Bionutrients last month announced a microalgae-based pattie to mimic vegie burgers made from algae including chlorella, which is already contained in some health supplements.
