THE dairy herd at the centre of a controversial plan to expand a dairy operation in South Gippsland is believed to be on the market.
The Weekly Times understands the herd of up to 500 milking cows and heifers, owned by Yo You Dairy, at Kernot, has been inspected by potential buyers.
Yo You’s parent company Ningbo Dairy is Chinese owned.
Yo You vice-president Harry Wang did not respond to questions this week, nor did a consultant hired to help Yo You with its planning application.
Yo You Dairy intended to double herd numbers at the 280ha farm and build a fresh-milk processing plant.
In August the Bass Coast Shire went against the advice of its planning department and refused the application to develop the free stall barn and bottling plant.
The shire received 430 submissions opposing the development.
