Victorian crops to receive much needed rain
Victorian grain growers are eagerly awaiting to see how much rain they will receive over the next few days. Here’s what’s predicted.
CROPS could receive a much needed drenching over the next few days, with parts of Victoria in for some decent rainfall.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Chris Arvier said rain was expected to continue to cross the northern part of Victoria today, with wet conditions expected right across the state – the heaviest downpours expected in the Mallee, Wimmera and the northern country.
Rainfall totals are looking like they will be between 10mm to 40mm, with the heaviest totals in the north of the state.
“The rain will extend to the south however, not as much rain is expected today in the southern districts,” Mr Arvier said.
Over the weekend, rainfall is anticipated to arrive in Gippsland and weather is likely to continue across the whole south of the state.
“Very heavy totals are expected in the Gippsland region,” he said.
“We are likely to see widespread totals of 50mm to 150mm of rainfall accumulate in east Gippsland on Saturday and Sunday.
“And potentially higher totals than that in the very far east and lower slopes of the Great Dividing Range.”
Mr Arvier said moderate to major flooding was also possible.
Victorian Farmers Federation grains president Ash Fraser said with rain starting to fall across the state, grain growers would eagerly be awaiting to see how much they have received.
“Crops are pretty desperate for rain – especially in the western parts of the state, Gippsland southern and northern areas,” Mr Fraser said.
“We would welcome 20mm at this point.
“We are tracking well but need rain in central west and northern parts.”
