THE heatwave of the past few days will strip the cream off crops in northeast Victoria and the Riverina.

Landmark Albury senior agronomist Doug McEachern described the season turnaround as “devastating”.

“There is enormous disappointment because we were looking at a huge year and now crops will be average at best to below average,” he said.

Cruel blow for crops

Rutherglen farmer Andrew Russell knows there are others far worse off.

His crops have gone from water logged in winter to potentially becoming heat stressed.

“Time will tell how all our crops will handle this heat,” Mr Russell said. “We had 550mm until the end of September and our annual rainfall is only 600mm.

“We are a bit disappointed but you won’t find us complaining at all.

“We know that there are many farmers far worse off than us and that we will get something to harvest.”
