Crop production: ABARES lifts Australia’s crop prospects for September
NSW is showing the strongest crop prospects this season and is expected to produce its second biggest winter crop in a decade, a new report has found.
AUSTRALIA’S winter crop production is forecast to increase eight per cent on estimates from June, a new crop report has found.
According to this month’s Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences crop report, 2020-21 winter crop production is expected to reach 47.9 million tonnes in 2020–21.
This is compared to ABARES estimates of 44.5 million tonnes in June.
And it is 20 per cent above the 10-year average to 2019–20 of 40 million tonnes.
For wheat, ABARES predicts production to hit 28.9 million tonnes, a rise on June estimates of 26.7 million tonnes.
Barley is forecast to reach 11.2 million tonnes, up almost one million tonnes on June predictions of 10.6 million tonnes.
Canola production is predicted at 3.4 million tonnes, a slight rise on June forecasts of 3.2 million tonnes.
NSW is showing the strongest crop prospects, the report found, following favourable winter rainfall and a solid start to the season .
The state is expected to have its second biggest winter crop in a decade, with production predicted at 14.8 million tonnes in 2020-21.
Last season, drought caused volumes to reach just 3.34 million tonnes.
“NSW production is forecast to be 14.8 million tonnes in 2020-21—that’s more than a 300 per cent increase on last year and the highest since 2016-17,” ABARES executive director Steve Hatfield-Dodds said.
The crop report indicated crop prospects were average to above average in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and southern Queensland.
Meanwhile StoneX Australia’s September crop production survey predicted national wheat production to reach 27.51 million tonnes - above their August results of 26.87 million tonnes.
Barley production is estimated at 10.57mmt and canola, 3.25 million tonnes.
