A FOURTH-GENERATION mixed-farming business near Geelong has been recognised as producing Victoria’s best steaks.

Jock Richmond’s Rose Grange Pastoral Company at Little River, near Geelong, was last week named most outstanding beef producer at Meat Standards Australia’s state awards in Lancefield.

Rose Grange Pastoral, which is managed by Jim Gaylard, runs a beef, prime lamb and cropping business across an aggregation of 3220ha. The business, which runs 900 Angus females, picked up the award for larger producers having achieved an average MSA index of 62.97. The index, from 30 to 80, is a measure of predicted eating quality.

More than 2000 producers who consigned cattle to the MSA program between 2007 and this year were eligible for the awards.

Mr Richmond said he was “a big believer that if we can maintain the eating quality of our meat for the end user, it augers well for our product”.

“A good eating experience is paramount, no matter what you’re eating,” he said.

Richard Nesseler, from Port Campbell, won the outstanding smaller producer category, while RM Gillett and Co’s Jalna Feedlot at Anakie was named the state’s most outstanding MSA feedlot. The Nankervis family from Corryong was presented with the MSA Progress Award.
