Labour of love for Bowman Performance Genetics
Neerim South stud principal Glen Bowman is what you’d call a bit of a perfectionist. His first on-property stud sale has been a culmination of 30 years of sourcing top genetics.
MOST studs launching their first on-property sale do not have to contend with the uncertainty of a pandemic and potential auction restrictions.
But for Bowman Performance Genetics, managing what happens in the next couple of months is “just another thing to deal with”.
For stud principal Glen Bowman, developing his business has been a labour of love, after he established his first Hereford stud at just 15-years-old.
Fast-forward 30 years and Glen has established a second Angus stud and is ready to offer 50 Angus and 10 Hereford bulls at his new property in Neerim South on September 25.
With potential COVID restrictions weighing on stud sales for buyer attendance Glen is hoping to maximise his audience by interfacing the sale with Auctionplus and holding an open day prior to the day.
“This year’s sale is the culmination of years of background work sourcing genetics,” Glen said.
While the Hereford stud has been growing steadily for many years, Glen has been rapidly building the Angus portion of the stud after sourcing his foundation females in 2013.
He bought 12 cows from the Aberdeen Estate Angus dispersal sale in NSW in 2013. Soon after, he bought embryos from the Millah Murrah Angus stud in Bathurst.
“I love going out and sourcing new genetics, doing all that groundwork and then 12 months later seeing the fruits of all that hard work,” Glen said.
Before this year’s sale Glen has been selling bulls privately as well as offering 14-16-month-old steers and heifer from their 1000 through the Leongatha store sale in November.
As a seventh-generation farmer, Glen has a passion for the cattle industry, but is the first of his family to establish a commercial stud.
After operating out of his family farm at Rosedale for all his life Glen bought the new property at Neerim South last year to expand the stud into its own business.
“The plan for this property is having the entire bull unit here. We run 1000 Hereford and Angus breeders at Rosedale so we’ll move the bulls across as yearlings to grow out until sale time,” he said.. “Now I’ve got the bulls ready the cattle market has lifted and we’ve had a fantastic season here in Gippsland.”
