Drakes Supermarkets chosen for Two Wells town centre project
Drakes will open one of its largest stores ever after being selected as the anchor tenant for a new town centre in Adelaide’s booming north.
Drakes Supermarkets will open one of its largest stores in Adelaide’s booming northern suburbs after being selected as the anchor tenant in a new $150m town centre development at Two Wells.
Developer Leyton Property has chosen Drakes to operate a new flagship supermarket at its proposed retail, healthcare, commercial and community hub planned for an 8ha site near the town’s main street.
The supermarket will feature in the $60m first stage of the Two Wells Town Centre project, which will also include specialty retail tenancies, a food & beverage precinct, childcare centre and swim school.
Drakes is planning a 3500sq m supermarket – one of its largest by footprint in South Australia – featuring its specialist offerings including The Little Kitchen, Nonna’s Pasta, F’Real Milkshakes, in-store popcorn and a generous service delicatessen.
It will employ up to 200 people.
Leyton Property managing director Hamish Brown said the supermarket and wider development would become the “destination of choice” in Adelaide’s outer north, providing a vibrant hub in one of the state’s fastest growing regions.
“It will also support the existing residential population surrounding Two Wells who are presently significantly under-serviced,” he said.
“Drakes is a proud supporter of local manufacturers and suppliers and we are confident that their investment in the Two Wells community and wider Adelaide Plains region will be positively received.”
Drakes Supermarkets managing director Roger Drake said the retailer would engage and work with the local Two Wells community “as much as possible” as part of the new store opening.
“As a proudly South Australian, family-owned business, Drakes is very excited to be part of the next chapter of Two Wells’ deep and storied history and heritage,” he said.
Leyton Property is partnering with Adelaide Plains Council on the Two Wells development, which will include a mix of retail, healthcare, commercial and community spaces, along with landscaped open spaces, on a 8ha site bound by Port Wakefield Highway, Old Port Wakefield Rd and Wells Rd and integrating with the town’s historic main street.
The local council acquired the site in 2022, and selected Leyton Property as its development partner earlier this year following an expressions of interest campaign run by Alinea Group and Leedwell Property.
Plans for the first stage of the project will be lodged for approval later this year, with construction expected to begin in the second half of 2025 and be completed in 2026.
Adelaide Plains Council chief executive James Miller said the development would create a “connected expansion of the existing town centre”.
“Council, mindful of its role in planning for unparalleled and unprecedented growth, has through Leyton Property facilitated what promises to be a special and unique retail offering for our community in which services and employment opportunities will be in abundance.”
The population of Two Wells – located about 40km north of Adelaide – has increased by close to 30 per cent over the past five years, making it one of the state’s fastest growing areas.
Nearby housing developments include Walker Corporation’s $3bn Riverlea estate which will deliver more than 12,000 new homes, and Hickinbotham’s $1.2bn Eden and Liberty project which is adding more than 3000 homes in Two Wells.
