Burke Urban adds 60ha to Newenham estate with plans for 400 new homes
One of the state’s largest housing projects is about to get bigger, with a local developer acquiring 60ha of additional land for 400 new homes.
One of the largest housing developments at Mount Barker is about to get bigger, with developer Burke Urban promising an additional 400 new homes on more than 60ha of land it has acquired adjacent to its Newenham housing estate.
Burke Urban has acquired the land – north-west of its existing masterplanned site on Flaxley Rd – from long-time owners the Liebelt family for an undisclosed sum, and is partnering with Melbourne-based Newland Developments on the expansion.
Newland has recruited former Metricon state general manager Richard Bryant as its new general manager for South Australia to oversee the project – its first in the state after completing a string of housing projects across Victoria.
Burke Urban managing director Kym Burke described it as an “exciting partnership” that would deliver much needed housing for the state.
“This is an exciting partnership that we are undertaking with Newland Developments,” he said.
“Their reputation for quality and commitment to excellence perfectly complements our ethos. Together, we are pooling resources and passion to create exceptional living spaces that enrich the lifestyle of current and future residents.”
The 400 additional homes planned for the expanded Newenham masterplan almost doubles the number of blocks in the project to 850.
Around 350 of those have already been built, while another major land release is planned later this year at the northern end of the estate.
A new school is also earmarked for a piece of land at the centre of the expanded site.
Newland has delivered more than 20 residential developments across Australia, and has a pipeline of projects under way across the eastern states.
Newland managing director Gideon Kline, whose father George Kline co-founded Metricon, said he was excited about being involved in an “extraordinary project”.
“Newenham is already regarded as one of South Australia’s finest residential developments, and we look forward to contributing to its continued growth and success.
“This collaboration aims to cement Newenham’s reputation as a benchmark for residential development in South Australia.”
Newenham is home to hundreds of new homes, as well as the King’s Baptist Grammar School, an 8ha Kitchen Farm Pantry regenerative farming enterprise, cafe and X Convenience petrol station, and there are plans to add more sports and recreation spaces, as well as additional retail and main street shopping outlets.
Burke Urban is also working with the Mount Barker District Council on plans for a new city centre precinct in the booming Adelaide Hills town.
A spokesperson for the Liebelt family said: “Many developers have approached us over the years, but with our family’s deep connection to this land, selling was not a decision we took lightly.
“Burke Urban’s thoughtful approach at Newenham gave us confidence that they would respect its history and preserve its beauty for years to come.”
