A beloved Greek restaurant which has been located in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD for over 40 years has been placed into liquidation.

Family-run Tsindos Greek Restaurant, located on Lonsdale St, entered voluntary liquidation on Monday, a notice lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission reveals.

Insolvency expert Mark Brereton of HoganSprowles has been appointed liquidator.

The traditional Greek restaurant, which first opened its doors in 1983, was known for its generous banquets, seafood and meat options and array of mezes and salads.

The three-level building that housed the iconic restaurant sold at an auction in mid-2019 for an estimated $8.1m.

It was previously reported that the site sold for $2m over the reserve to a Taiwan-based buyer, and that Tsindos had another four years left on their lease.

Tsindos has been family owned and run for decades, spanning across three generations.

The restaurant was established in 1970 by Harry and Eleni Tsindos, and has been run by Eleftheria and Fred Tsindos since 1984.

Fred’s son Harry Tsindos Jnr has been managing the eatery for more than a decade.

The pocket of Lonsdale St, between Swanston and Russell St, is considered Melbourne’s Greek precinct, but its relevance has declined in recent years with various retailers and hospitality operators shutting down.

It comes after Melbourne institution International Cakes – which was the last remaining bakery in the city’s Greek precinct – closed its doors after 60 years last year.
