‘So sad’: 19-year-old’s shock death rocks community

A promising law student and football player died suddenly last month leaving her community reeling in shock.

A rising football star has tragically died in her sleep aged 19.

Aurelia Hayes has been remembered as a “beautiful soul” after passing away “peacefully” on July 30.

Haynes was a member of the Umina United club in the Central Coast’s WPL competition, having previously been a member of the Canberra United Academy.

Haynes then joined the Northbridge NPL Under-20s team as well as the Hills United played in Sydney before joining Umina this season.

Not only a footballer, Haynes was also a law student at Macquarie University, where she was also set to play football.

In a post on August 2, Umina paid tribute to the youngster.

“Aurelia brought her youthful energy, her friendly smile, dedication, gentle nature and her love for the game into our club,” the tribute read.

“On behalf of our entire Umina United family, we send our deepest condolences to Aurelia’s family and friends.”

Northbridge FC, the team she’d played Miniroos before going all the way to the NPL teams, also commented: “Aurelia’s love for the club and her teammates shone brightly in every match and training session. She cherished the fun and success they shared.

“Her spirit, skill, and camaraderie will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.

“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with Aurelia’s family during this difficult time. She will always hold a special place in the hearts of everyone at Northbridge FC. Rest in peace, Aurelia.”

Canberra United also said it was “devastated to hear of the sudden tragic passing of former Academy member Aurelia Haynes”.

On August 13, the WPL held the Aurelia Haynes Memorial Round, where Haynes’ Umina United played Woongarrah FC, with the teams having a minute of silence before the match.

Although not in body, Haynes was there in spirit with the club setting up a shrine with her No. 24 jersey, a photo and a bouquet of flowers sitting on a chair next to the pitch.

“It was an emotional day as we came together to pay our respects to Aurelia,” the club wrote on Facebook.

“We welcomed Aurelia’s parents Philip and Kate and the outpouring of love was on display throughout the afternoon.

“We would like to thank everybody who came along to wrap their arms around the girls as they played in tribute to their teammate and friend Aurelia.

“To Kaine, the players and supporters from Woongarrah — your kindness, compassion and support were amazing, we can’t thank you enough. And to the two beautiful ladies who brought flowers, thank you.”

The tributes have flowed in after the gesture.

“Very sorry for your loss xxx love to you all xxx,” one wrote.

Another commented: “Sending so much love from the rams.”

Another posted: “So sad, beautiful young lady. I worked with her in Gosford.”
