Manly coach Anthony Seibold and skipper Daly Cherry-Evans have declined to make any excuses for their shock 34-26 loss to the Tigers, despite the Sea Eagles captain being overheard on field labelling a sin bin against his side as “outrageous”.

Three Manly players were sin binned throughout the course of the match, meaning they only played with 13 men for 50 minutes. The first of those was against forward Ethan Bullemor, who was given ten minutes late in the first half for committing one of many successive Sea Eagles penalties.

The decision led to a somewhat heated discussion between referee Peter Gough and Cherry-Evans.

“I had the talk with you in the in goal after the try. I just gave you the no more,” Gough said.

“That’s outrageous”, Cherry-Evans replied.

Gough had the final word when he shot back: “That’s your discipline Daly, fix it.”

There would be no score during Bullemor’s sin bin but when forward Haumole Olakau’atu was given his marching orders for a high shot seconds before Bullemor was due to return to the field, the Tigers scored three straight tries within the next ten minutes to race out to a 30-16 lead.

Corey Waddell was the third Manly sin bin of the night in the 66th minute.

When asked about the sin bins in the post-match press conference, Seibold said the blame should be placed squarely on his side.

“I’m not going to make any excuses, our discipline was poor tonight. I keep saying it, but we were outplayed and that’s diappointing as we had a whole heap to play for tonight,” he said.

“You get what you deserve in the NRL and tonight we weren’t there.”

In addition to the sin binnings, Manly were on the wrong end of a 6-1 penalty count in the first half.

Remarkably, the six Tigers penalties came between a 23-minute window from the 14th to the 37th minute.

The Tigers, who were trailing 16-0 after 23 minutes, would score two tries from penalties to trim the margin to four (16-12) at half time.

However, the Manly captain didn’t bite when asked if the penalties were fair.

“We were outplayed and our discipline let us down,” Cherry-Evans said

“It’s not ideal. It’s a lot. Six is a lot in one half so we need to take a look at ourselves and take a look at our discipline.”

The loss has ended any hope Manly had of finishing in the top four, and with two tough games against the Bulldogs and Sharks to end the regular season, the Sea Eagles are no sure thing to even make the eight.
