‘Found out’: Tottenham’s stance on Ange Postecoglou amid embarrassing 3-2 defeat to Everton

Ange Postecoglou may well have just overseen his last game as Tottenham coach after Spurs suffered yet another defeat on Monday morning (AEDT).

Ahead of their match against lowly Everton, Spurs were defiant that the Australian coach had the full support of the team and board.

But after a 3-2 loss to Everton – which helped the Toffees pull clear of the relegation zone – there is a sense of inevitability about his sacking.

Previously goal-shy Everton tore through Spurs’ understrength backline to net three times in the first half.

Spurs pulled two back in the second half but it was too little too late for Postecoglou’s men.

A first win in seven league games takes David Moyes’ Everton four points clear of the bottom three.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s 12th Premier League defeat of the season leaves them just four points above Everton in 15th and ramps up the pressure on manager Postecoglou.

“This is not about me, but what is about me is I have a responsibility to the players I do have. “For me to focus on anything else is abstaining from the responsibility I do have,” said Postecoglou.

It has been a rough year for Postecoglou who was without 10 first-team regulars for the match against Everton.

To compound the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and three of Postecoglou’s preferred back four in Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie, Tottenham were also without club-record signing Dominic Solanke.

Postecoglou’s men remain alive in three cup competitions, but Tottenham owner Daniel Levy has a decision to make on whether the quest for a first trophy since 2008 would be better served by a change of manager.

And former Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara admits that he’d be “surprised” if Postecoglou isn’t sacked before their next game.

“I tell you what, I’ll be surprised if he survives, Ange, regardless of the injuries and regardless of what we’ve got in terms of being in cup competitions, the premier league is bread and butter, it’s not good enough,” the ex-Tottenham ace said on Sky Sports News.

“You can’t be 15th in the table and 3-0 down against Everton, I know there’s injuries but come on, Bournemouth have got injuries but they went to Newcastle and won 4-1, put a bit of respect into the fact that you have to play a different style of football and just expecting it to continue.”

And former Premier League player Dwight Yorke believes he was always going to be exposed in England.

“Ange Postecoglou has been a breath of fresh air to Tottenham, he’s brought in an attacking philosophy back to the club again. But, there’s always a risk with that kind of free-flowing football, but there’s always a risk of being exposed when you play that way,” Yorke told CoinCasino.com.

“Looking from the outside, I can understand why people are questioning his tactics and style of play, he gets found out sometimes. When you play in the Premier League, the best league in the world, you can get found out a lot if your defence is not sound.

“I’ve been a Tottenham fan ever since I was a kid, and I’m happy Postecoglou has brought back an attacking way of football, but sometimes he does need to adapt to a game where he can sit back and defend.

“Postecoglou came from Celtic, the best team in Scotland with the best players, you can be as attacking-minded as you’d like. He also came from Yokohama, one of the best teams in Japan. Now he’s joined a top-seven side in Tottenham, he was always going to get found out eventually.”

Tottenham are, however, a goal up in their Carabao Cup semi-final tie with Liverpool, with Postecoglou previously expressing his confidence about ending the club’s 17-year run without a trophy.

And Postecoglou remains positive that he can still get something out of their season.

“We’re still in all four competitions. Our league position is not great, to say the least, but eventually, our players will come back. Significant talent will come back,” added Postecoglou.

“I’ve got great motivation to get through this so when we do get our players back we can get something significant out of our season.”
