He was remembered as "Mother Nature's trusted son", a keen grommet and a soul mate.
This morning tributes flowed for 24-year-old surfer Ben Linden, or "Big Red" as he was affectionately known, who died from a shark attack near Wedge Island two weeks ago.
More than 200 friends, family and fellow members of the surfing community converged on Brighton Beach as part of a memorial "paddle-out."
Reverend and godfather John Hewitson described Ben as having a "larger-than-life personality" and expressed thanks to the public for their support.
"This has been wonderful to see everyone honour life and support each other," Rev Hewitson said.
"Family and friends, as well as others in the community have been touched."
With a blowing of a conch from sister Kelli and touching words by girlfriend Alana, the water was quickly filled with black neoprene as surfers paddled out to form a circle.
While onlookers from the shore cast their stares to the horizon, a surfboard containing tribute messages was washed, leaving words from loved ones to seep into the sea and accompany Ben's spiritual resting place.
