Five-star hotel opens, 57 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD
Why would you open a five-star hotel 57 kilometres from the CBD? Well why wouldn’t you, says hotel giant Accor. It has signed a deal with licensed venue and NRL club operator, Panthers Group, to open a Pullman in the Panthers Penrith Precinct of the Sydney outer western suburb, an hour’s drive from central Sydney.
With the new Western Sydney Airport half an hour away and due to open in 2026 and Glenbrook, the first town in the Blue Mountains less than nine kilometres away, the Panthers Group realised its spiritual home was ripe for redevelopment.
Home to the Penrith Panthers Rugby Leagues Club, the Nepean River frontage property, also now known as the East Side Quarter has been undergoing a $500 million transformation to include 850 apartments, retail, parkland, and the 1250-square-metre Western Sydney Conference Centre.
It’s to this the 153-room Pullman Sydney Penrith hotel, slated to open in the fourth quarter of 2023, is attached.
Accor Pacific chief executive Sarah Derry says the hotel is a great fit for the company, which since 2019 has already opened five significant hotels in suburban Australia: Mantra Epping Melbourne (2019); Hotel Chadstone Melbourne – MGallery by Sofitel (2019); The Sebel Melbourne Ringwood (2021); Mercure Melbourne Doncaster (2022); and Wonil Hotel Perth – Handwritten Collection (2023).
“There has been a noticeable shift in the development of Australian suburbs when it comes to accommodation options,” says Derry.
“While small motels have been a long-standing feature, there has indeed been an increase in the establishment of bigger name, higher star hotels. This trend can be attributed to various factors such as the growing tourism industry, increased demand for different accommodations, and the desire to cater to a wider range of travellers. These larger hotels often offer more amenities, spacious rooms, and a high-quality level of service, attracting both domestic and international visitors looking for a more upscale experience.”
As well as hotels, there’s been a proliferation of serviced apartments, with the likes of PuntHill extending their offering.
“Suburbs often have their own unique charm and attractions that draw visitors. By having hotels in these areas, travellers can experience the local culture and explore nearby attractions,” adds Derry.
“In the past few years, The Sebel Melbourne Ringwood and Mercure Melbourne Doncaster have opened, providing easy access to the beautiful wine tasting region of the Yarra Valley, which is appealing for guests looking for experiences.”
While some outer suburbs might cause those familiar with them to raise their eyebrows at the idea of “attractions” for visitors, there’s no doubt that for business travellers, having somewhere to stay close to hospitals, universities and corporate HQs is a bonus.
Of Penrith, Derry says, “Western Sydney is already the third-largest economy in Australia behind the Sydney and Melbourne CBDs. Investing in hotels in these locations allows Accor to cater to business travellers who may prefer to stay closer to their workplace or clients”
There are also, she says, “people who prefer to stay away from the hustle and bustle of city centres and may prefer the tranquillity and accessibility of suburban locations.”
The Chen Melbourne - Art Series is an example of one that opened with the locals in mind. Situated in the Melbourne eastern suburb of Box Hill, its design cues come from being at the centre of the Victorian capital’s largest Chinese population. It’s also nearby two hospitals and a large TAFE. Derry says like the Pullman Penrith, which is next door to a large convention centre, a suburban location still must have assets to recommend it.
“The hotel should be easily accessible by major roads, highways, or public transportation, ensuring convenience for both leisure and business travellers. Proximity to airports and train stations can also be an advantage, as can access to local services such as restaurants, shopping centres and entertainment venues.”
And if you’re wondering why your neck of the woods hasn’t got its own five-star yet, well, maybe it’s time to put your best foot forward.
Derry says, “A great suburban hotel location should also have a vibrant local community with a welcoming atmosphere. This can include friendly residents, local events, festivals, or markets, which can provide guests with an authentic local experience.”
