Best things to see, do and eat in Las Vegas: Expert expat travel tips
By Belinda Jackson
Australian acrobat Julian Aldag is originally from Adelaide, and moved to Vegas in 2013 to perform with Cirque du Soleil. He joined at the creation of the Michael Jackson ONE show and has been a performer on the show ever since. It' s now showing at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, on the Strip. SEE
One of my favourite spots to visit is the Neon Museum, a unique museum in Downtown Las Vegas that collects retired casino signs. The museum itself is like a snapshot of the history of Vegas and is the perfect place to take photos, neonmuseum.org
DO
Hiking at Red Rock National Park is a great way to get outdoors, away from the busyness of the Strip and enjoy the natural wonders of what Vegas's surrounds have to offer. Red Rock is just 20 minutes from the Strip, so hiking in the park is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon when staying in Vegas. I like walking around the Calico Basin hike, and it's quite common to see rock climbers there.
EAT
My favourite cafe has to be Gäbi Coffee & Bakery, off Strip. It's a secret cafe with minimal signage and advertising. The inside is decorated with a mixture of classic Asian and modern Western design and is a great place for a quick bite or coffee. Definitely a favourite spot for locals, gabicafe.com
DRINK
Two words: Golden Tiki. It's Vegas' best tiki bar. It has an unforgettable atmosphere filled with animatronic parrots and amazing cocktails. My favourite cocktail is the Lime in the Coconut, which is served on fire. Did I mention it's open 24hrs? See thegoldentiki.com
AVOID
Driving on the Strip. It can be a beautiful experience at night, but will feel like you are stuck in rush (peak) hour traffic the whole time. Instead, have fun and soak in the ambience by walking.
