Race-by-race preview and tips for Sunday meeting at Nowra

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track.

Race 1

5. Goodnight Barlow was tried at this distance in early February at the Sapphire Coast and ran well, only beaten around two-and-a-half-lengths when finishing fourth. He’s finished sixth in his latest two runs at Canberra and Orange and doesn’t strike a hard race here. 7. Is It To Be had been racing well enough before battling on well when fourth at Wagga last weekend.

He steps back up in distance for this. He can make an impact if he can get a good run on the speed. 4. Jamacri is an on-pace runner that is also stepping up in distance, having finished fourth at Goulburn when last produced. She is a chance if she can run out the trip. 2. Highballer ran an improved race when a last-start fourth at the Sapphire Coast. He can run into the placings with a repeat.
How to play it: Goodnight Barlow WIN.

Race 2

7. Sparklenglitter looked good in her trials before doing the job well to score on debut at Orange. She has speed and should take up a prominent position again from a good draw. Will take plenty of running down. 2. Miss Mikki Isle has a win and six placings from seven starts, and comes into this after a last-start second at Gundagai. She is drawn to get a good run. 3. Zoutempus resumed with a strong Goulburn win and can take beating again, while 4. Motorboat was a first-up second at Bathurst and can figure prominently.
How to play it: Sparklenglitter WIN.

Race 3

7. Alottosay has had only three starts, and she has been placed in each, including a second behind Rose Aye here at her second run. She’s drawn well and gets her chance to break through with a win. 2. Cammi ran third at this track at her latest start. She can run into the placings again with a repeat. 5. Snuba resumed for a new stable with a seventh at Goulburn, and the extra distance should be to her liking. 1. Shoreman resumes from a spell having had two starts last September and October when he didn’t do a lot. Expect improvement fresh.
How to play it: Alottosay WIN.

6. Here Comes Hogan’s only win came in a three-horse race at Scone when favourite. He followed that with a second at this track last September. He was unplaced in three runs after that and has had two good recent trials leading into this return to racing. 8. Deni Gal won and ran third at this track in February and has the talent at best to be a factor again. 1. Snappy Jim was a winner at the Sapphire Coast in February before being spelled. 2. Vis I Do is resuming for a new stable and is a recent trial winner at Kembla Grange.
How to play it: Here Comes Hogan WIN.

Race 5

3. Knights Reign was second-up from a spell when finishing third at Goulburn at his latest start. He’s had only three starts and shows enough promise to give this a shake. 8. Millie De Lune has been unplaced from each of her four starts but showed glimpses of ability. She has had two trials to prepare for this return from a good barrier. 9. Pharaline resumed from a spell with an improved fourth at Gundagai, and has place claims against this company. 11. Via Varallo has been placed in his past three starts and can be thereabouts again.
How to play it: Knights Reign WIN.

Race 6

1. Joyrider has shown talent, being placed in five of 11 starts. He resumes here having finished eighth at Warwick Farm last June. He’s won two trials leading into this return to racing and should be primed to sprint well. 9. Rare Moon failed to fire at Taree when last produced, but her previous form was sound enough to be rated a chance against these. 11. Lockhart is on debut and his latest trial was solid when third at Rosehill. 12. Tigletta has looked good in two trials in preparation for this debut and bears close watching.
How to play it: Joyrider WIN.

Race 7

3. Chilly Charlie has won only one of 11 starts, and while he has been below his best in each run either side of a spell, his previous form was solid enough to be rated a contender against these. 10. Spencer’s Spirit resumes from a spell here and has had two trials in preparation. He was placed at this track at the end of December and is worth including among the main chances. 9. Placid Pearl took on the VRC Oaks at the end of her last campaign and was less than eight lengths behind Treasurethe Moment. She resumed with a fourth at Goulburn in February and has since won a Randwick trial leading into this. 5. Mega Fight won two on end at Moruya at this track last campaign and has had two runs since resuming, finishing fifth in the latest at the Sapphire Coast. He warrants respect on his best form.
How to play it: Chilly Charlie WIN.
