Sea Eagles blow up about horror NRL schedule after latest loss

By Adrian Proszenko

Manly coach Anthony Seibold has implored the NRL to reassess its scheduling after his side endured a horror stretch of three games in just 11 days.

The Sea Eagles lost their third successive game, a 20-18 defeat to St George Illawarra at 4 Pines Park. They lost Jake Trbojevic for most of the game - and for the next one against Penrith - after the NSW captain was diagnosed with a category-one concussion. Nathan Brown (shoulder) and Tommy Talau (leg) were also casualties during a costly night.

Seibold is one of the most measured mentors in the NRL, who rarely turns the focus on forces outside his control. However, he spoke out on behalf of his club and others who have been adversely affected by quirks in the 2025 draw.

“This is something I was going to say regardless of the result, but that’s five games in 25 days,” Seibold said.

“The NRL’s never been more demanding and we talk about player welfare and wellbeing and so on. I just don’t understand how not only is it five games in 25 days, if you narrow it down a bit more, it’s three games in 11 days.

“I see it’s the same with other clubs, I see the Raiders, their schedule, the Sharks schedule …

“I don’t know how that comes about; playing Perth on Saturday, flying back Sunday, and then we turn around on a Thursday night.

“We had 20 minutes on the field this entire week, so it’s difficult. I’ve seen other teams with it as well, so it’s not just us, it’s across the competition and needs to be looked at.

“In the AFL they don’t have less than six-day turnarounds.”

The NRL draw has been unkind to other teams as well. The Raiders have spent much of the season on the road, including trips to Vegas, Townsville and Perth. Another anomaly has been teams playing each other twice within a matter of weeks.

However, Seibold felt the short turnarounds warranted discussion to ensure they were reduced in future seasons.

“No one’s gonna listen to one coach,” Seibold said.

“I’m just putting it out there that we talk about well-being and player welfare.

“This is something that needs to be looked at going forward, it’s not gonna change this year.

“We’ve got another three games in 11 days during the Origin period, four if you’re playing Origin, it’s something that needs to be looked at.

“It’s not a whinge, I see it with other clubs, so it’s not just us … it’s across the board.”

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan praised his team for heeding the lessons learnt in heartbreaking close losses to South Sydney and Parramatta.

“The effort, the scramble, the attitude was there,” Flanagan said.

“We made some silly errors and if we want to go to that next level we need to get them out of our game.

“That’s what I need to keep driving into our group about stopping putting ourselves under pressure.”

Farewell, sports fans

That’s it for tonight. In the end it was a thrilling contest. Hopefully, we get seven more close finishes this weekend. Go well.

Dragons 20 beat Sea Eagles 18

Tommy Turbo can’t come back quickly enough.

Manly has been without the injured Tom Trbojevic for three matches and lost them all. Two of them have been at home.

For much of the latest loss, to St George Illawarra during a see-sawing affair at a sold-out 4 Pines Park, they were also without Jake Trbojevic. The NSW captain was ruled out of the game - and the next one against Penrith - after being diagnosed with a category-one concussion.

It was a tale of three Trbojevics. After his head injury, Jake joined Tom - who is hoping to return from a groin injury against the premiers - on the sidelines. It was left for another sibling, Ben, to cross for a try that seemingly gave Manly all of the momentum.

But in a crazy, topsy-turvy game, where the pendulum swung from one side to the other, it finished in favour of the visitors. Deservedly so.

This is a game that the Dragons had to win multiple times. Their lead, at one stage as large as 14 points, was whittled away while the Sea Eagles had a man in the sin-bin. It was that type of night.

The arrival of Clint Gutherson at fullback may have helped, rather than hindered, the career of Tyrell Sloan. Shifted to the wing, Sloan twice showcased his blistering speed to score crucial tries.

Yet given the Red V had already twice blown what seemed match-winning leads this year, there was tension to the very end.

With only two minutes left on the clock, Daly Cherry-Evans attempted a long-range, two-point field-goal attempt. When it missed the mark, the better team escaped with their own two points.

Dragons win. Dragons win

It ends as it started for Manly. Another basic handling error, this time from Luke Brooks gives the Dragons the ball back that’s all she wrote. The Dragons will be happy with the win, but this is much more about the poor showing from the Sea Eagles. Dragons win 20-18

Bad kick from DCE

Daly miscued badly there. He wanted a high-floating bomb, he got a sliced effort that went over the sideline. That’s more time off the clock and Manly are starting to look edgy. They’ll probably get two more sets to win this. Are they good enough? Dragons lead 20-18 after 77 minutes

Haumole having a horror

Hulking Manly back-rower won’t want to see a replay of this game. He was poor in the first half, and now just dropped the ball with his side on the attack. He started poorly and hasn’t really improved. All will be forgiven is he produces a match-winner. Five minutes remain.

Lucky escape for Gutherson

A terrible decision by Dragons fullback Clint Gutherson to not attempt to catch a high kick ended with Lukje Brooks touching down, but luckily for the veteran No.1, a Manly player was off-side. The Dragons will lead by two and now only eight minutes remain. Dragons lead 20-18 after 72 minutes
