The day started frustratingly with the first session and a bit lost to rain, which meant only 56.2 overs were bowled for the day. The main story of the day was Steve Smith reaching his maiden Test century - with a six over long-on. The lower-order support he received from James Faulkner (23 off 21 deliveries) and Ryan Harris (33 off 27) helped Australia to 9-492 before its captain Michael Clarke declared in the last session. It left Smith unbeaten on 138 from 241 deliveries, with 16 fours and 2 sixes.
England's first 17.3 overs at the crease produced few nervous moments, which pitch conditions seemingly in clear favour of the batsmen at the moment. How long that situation lasts will have a big influence on the match. A long time will probably push the match towards a draw.
