Jet-setting Sixers import primed for another WBBL campaign

By Ben Weir

Despite having only flown in three days before her opening match, Sydney Sixers import Dane Van Niekerk says she will battle jet lag to turn out for their Women's Big Bash showdown with the Melbourne Stars this weekend.

The South African captain missed the Sixers' first two games of the new WBBL campaign and has battled leg injuries throughout the year but expects to line up against the Melbourne Stars on Saturday afternoon.

It is her second season with the Sixers and she brushed aside concerns about the quick turn around, stating the nature of modern cricket meant she was used to going from tournament to tournament with little breaks.

"I’m actually OK [with jet lag], I’m glad I’m starting training today so I can get over the worst of it," Niekerk told reporters.

"I’ve done it for four or five years now so I kind of know what to expect."

The Sixers take on the Melbourne Stars at Hurstville Oval and despite the Stars coming off two losses, Niekerk said the Sixers will not be taking them lightly.

"We know the Stars are a good side, they have some explosive players ... and they will be looking to get on the points table," Niekerk said.

Despite her absence, the South African star has been keeping an eye on the game globally and is amazed at the form of Sixers captain Ellyse Perry throughout the international season and into the domestic campaign.

"You want someone like that in your team getting player of the match after player of the match and being the captain and leader," Niekerk said.

The Sixers have named a 13-member squad to face the Stars, with left-arm fast bowler Lauren Cheatle not considered due to injury and teenager Emma Hughes at home in Dubbo completing her HSC exams.

The Sixers smashed cross-town rivals the Sydney Thunder by 49 runs in their first match before suffering a heavy loss to reigning Big Bash champions the Brisbane Heat in their second outing.
