As it happened: Maxwell ton, runout controversy as Australia seal win

Thanks for joining us for the second T20 in Adelaide.

To be honest, after Glenn Maxwell did … well, a Glenn Maxwell, it looked like the mega innings would be the big talking point and with the West Indies chasing 242, it would be a pretty regulation Australian win from there.

But the Australians fell afoul of the umpires not once but twice in the second innings, first when Adam Zampa was not allowed to bowl because he had been off the field for too long. And then again, when umpire Gerard Abood was very clear that Alzarri Joseph was not run out because the hosts had failed to appeal. You could say Abood was less than impressed with the Australians’ behaviour. The West Indies put up a pretty good fight with the bat, and there were also the efforts of Spencer Johnson in his first home appearance for Australia, at his home ground no less.

At the end of the night, it was an Australian win by 34 runs, and they have an unassailable 2-0 series lead. We will pick things back up again in Perth on Tuesday for the final match of the series. We’ll see you then!

That’s the match and the series for Australia as the night ends on a strange note. Marcus Stoinis throws down the stumps after his final delivery but the ball ricochets off the stumps and rolls away for four. Australia appeal for the runout, but it’s clearly not, and in the end the victory is sealed by 34 runs.

It was a comprehensive win in Adelaide tonight, set up by a huge innings from Glenn Maxwell and a mega score that left the Windies behind the eight-ball from the start of their chase.

The Australians are not happy at all here, because they are claiming they appealed for a runout that would have ended the game – but umpire Gerard Abood has given not out and very clearly stated there was no appeal.

Spencer Johnson knocked the bails off when Alzarri Joseph was clearly out of his ground. But the umpire ruled their had been no appeal from the hosts, and therefore Joseph could not be run out, despite the crowd cheering when the replay was showed on the big screen.

Players could be heard on the stump mics arguing their case – Tim David was especially adamant that he appealed (“this is a joke, mate”) – and another Australian has said “that’s umpire error”.

But Abood was very clear.

“Stop, stop, stop. There was no appeal,” he could be heard saying on the Fox broadcast. He chastised the Australians for their behaviour as they protested, though captain Mitch Marsh had pulled David away.

“Guys, we’re getting into really poor territory,” Abood said.

Australian cricket great Mike Hussey agreed with Abood in commentary for Fox, describing it as a bad look by the Australians. Hussey urged them to accept the umpires’ call and move on.

Josh Hazlewood has knocked Akeal Hosein’s stumps over for a first-ball duck with a yorker.

Just over 19,000 people are on hand at Adelaide Oval to see Australia one wicket away from victory.

Adam Zampa has the wicket of the West Indies captain and though Rovman Powell gets a warm hand as he leaves Adelaide Oval, he’ll no doubt be disappointed. Josh Inglis was out there waiting and took the catch comfortable. Powell heads off the field and with him, any hope for the tourists.

And the West Indies need 77 runs. Rovman Powell has played a nice innings for his 50, and Jason Holder is no slouch with the bat. But the West Indies still need that miracle. Is Powell capable of providing it?

He was just dropped, if you can call it that, by Marcus Stoinis who is in some discomfort after the ball blasted through his hands and bent his index finger back. Adam Zampa almost met the same fate off his own bowling the next ball.

Romario Shepherd’s night is over, and it is a wicket for Jason Behrendorff, who has had a bit of a shocker really. He’s been expensive but is now 1-54 in his last over.

The Australians have gone upstairs to review a not out call for a potential caught behind off the bowling of Marcus Stoinis. Hotspot shows nothing and Snicko shows a spike – but the umpire rules it is a frame too far and the ball was past the bat. The decision is not out – after a slight stumble where the TV cameras showed the wrong umpire to confirm the decision.

Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell are out in the middle for the Windies; they need 88 off 30 balls to win. And for the record, Zampa is allowed back into the attack – and he has a smile on his face.

Spinner Adam Zampa is not happy – he has gone to come back into the attack but looks like he’s been told he can’t as he was off the field for too long.

Zampa’s response looks pretty lippy as he heads back out to the field and he’s not the only Australian with something to say about the umpires’ call.

“There’s plenty more things in the game to worry about,” an Australian player (sounds like Matthew Wade behind the stumps) could be heard saying on the mic.

Well, the blogger’s curse (??) strikes again. That’s the end of Andre Russell’s innings, gone for 37 off a short ball from Marcus Stoinis. That is a trudge off if I’ve ever seen one, and fair enough too. Surely that’s the end of all hope for the Windies.

Stoinis is also confident he has another one off the very next ball – but no dice and the Aussies don’t appeal. And now Romario Shepherd is having a concussion check – Stoinis’ last ball knocked him in the head. He seems OK.
