Walsh: Eyes on Konstas

By Dan Walsh

Worth watching the celebration from Jasprit Bumrah there after several words with Sam Konstas over time wasting preceded Usman Khawaja’s nick to second slip.

Bumrah turned to Konstas at the non-striker’s end and let loose a fair old bellow.

The teen opener has managed to rile the nicest, and best, fast bowler in world cricket. Makes for a fascinating day two battle.

What drama: Khawaja falls on final ball of the day

By Jon Pierik

On the final delivery of the day, Usman Khawaja spars at a straight delivery from around the wicket by Bumrah, and delivers a thick edge to K.L. Rahul at second slip. It’s the sixth time in the series that Bumrah has dismissed Khawaja.

Bumrah celebrates by turning and running towards Konstas, although the Australian had already started his amble to the pavilion.

Australia are 1-9 at stumps.

Meanwhile, Scott Boland, with four wickets, said he had been happy to bowl first, after Bumrah had opted to bat first at the toss of the coin.

“I wasn’t too disappointed by bowling,” he said.

Konstas charges again: Is this plan going to work long term?

Sam Konstas charges Bumrah again but does not connect. Next ball, there is a forward defence, which is also fortunate to not end with an edge. While Konstas has quickly become must-watch, is his overly aggressive manner going to work long-term if he maintains that manner? We’ll see.

Now, Konstas and Bumrah exchange words in what Adam Gilchrist on Fox Cricket says is “gamesmanship”, for Konstas and Usman Khawaja had been chatting through the over in a bid to waste time, in what shapes as the last over of the afternoon.

Siraj: Don’t forget me

While the focus is on Jasprit Bumrah, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj also has the ability to cause havoc on this seaming deck. There was a peach of a delivery that all but squared Khawaja up and almost induced a nick.

Khawaja hit on finger; seeks treatment

By Jon Pierik

It’s been a day of body blows on a SCG wicket that has played havoc with batsmen. The latest to feel its wrath is Khawaja, who was stuck on the crease and jumped while playing a shortish ball from Bumrah and was hit smack on the gloves.

That clearly hurt the left-hander, who is having running repairs, including his fingers taped. But Khawaja remains at the crease. He flicks the next delivery behind square for a single.

Konstas charges Bumrah and belts boundary to open innings

It’s the old and the new at the crease with veteran Usman Khawaja and teenage star Sam Konstas at the crease.

Jasprit Bumrah has the ball, and will take initial aim at Konstas. Here we go – first ball. And it’s Konstas charging Bumrah and clipping him over mid-wicket for four. Wow!
