Australia v India as it happened: Aussie top order pass Bumrah test after Starc’s set of six runs through India

Good night

That’s all from me for the night.

Stick around for all the news and views from the sheds from Tom Decent and Daniel Brettig.

We’ll be back on Saturday from 2:30 pm (AEDT) for the second day.

Magnificent first day for Australia

Thrashed in Perth, Australia could not have asked for a much better start to the second Test in Adelaide.

They dismissed India for 180 then got through the final session under lights against the new ball for the loss of one wicket - Usman Khawaja.

Test newbie Nathan McSweeney gets to the dressing room unbeaten on 38, and the under-siege Marnus Labuschagne is not out on 20 after taking an age to get off the mark.

Both players batted with courage and determination. They left confidently and waited for India’s bowlers to come to him.

Thirteen byes didn’t hurt either.

At stumps, Australia are 1/86, trailing by 94. They’ll have about four hours of natural light to bat through before the lights take effect.

Ashwin into the attack

India wait until the penultimate over of the evening to give their master spinner Ravichandran Ashwin a bowl.

I was surprised he wasn’t used a bit earlier given his success against Australia. Even in conditions that do not suit him, he is wily enough to find a way.

Ashwin hurried through the over so there’ll be one more tonight. No surprises for guessing who will bowl it - Jasprit Bumrah.

Day one crowd

The crowd for day one is in. It’s 50,186. Adelaide people love their Test cricket, and support with their feet.

Why wouldn’t they? They have, in my humble opinion, the best Test venue in the country. If you haven’t been to one, I highly recommend it.

It’s only the fourth time Adelaide’s had a crowd over 50,000.

Review - McSweeney survives lbw shout

Nathan McSweeney’s in a bit of trouble here. To the naked eye he looked cooked to one from Harshit Rana that came back sharply.

The umpire’s turned down the appeal but India were quick to send the decision upstairs.

Well, I was wrong. Ball tracker has the ball missing leg stump. I thought at the very worst for India it would have been the umpire’s call, but it’s not. McSweeney survives, India lose a review. He’s on 31 not out.

Bumrah’s back

The game will rise in intensity now that Jasprit Bumrah is back in the attack.

Australia have gotten on top in the last little bit, scoring 36 runs from the past eight overs against an India team that lost their concentration.

Bumrah, though, is the threat. The Australians have, to a large extent, absorbed a lot of what Bumrah has thrown at them.

It was not until the final ball of his sixth over in his first spell when India’s talisman with the ball struck, removing Usman Khawaja for 13.

Don’t go anywhere in the next 20 minutes. It might be clearly Australia’s day right now, but a lot can happen when Bumrah has the ball.

Tensions rising

It’s getting a little testy out there.

Marnus Labuschagne has upset Mohammed Siraj by pulling out late in the bowler’s delivery stride.

An angry Siraj vented his frustration by throwing the ball at the stumps.

Labuschagne, though, was well within his right to pull out. There was a yahoo in the crowd carrying dozens of empty beer cups walking behind the sightscreen.

Next ball, Labuschagne cut Siraj square for four to the cheers of the pro-Australian crowd.

When will stumps be tonight?

Just a reminder, they can play until 10:30pm (AEDT) to get the overs in.

Stumps is usually at 10pm (AEDT) but they can take the extra half hour to get the allotted overs in.

I highly doubt India will be able to bowl the 22 to complete the 90, which has been reduced to 88 today for the change of innings.

Australia weren’t exactly getting through them in a hurry today. It could have ramifications from a World Test Championship point of view if the umpires deem them to have been behind the over rate. Every point is precious right now.
