Newnes joins Blues, Swans grab two, Buzza signs for Power

By Anthony Colangelo

Carlton have announced the signing of former St Kilda winger Jack Newnes.

Newnes, 26, had a contract offer from the Saints but chose to reject that. He was delisted last week and joins Carlton as a delisted free agent.

He has played 155 games since his debut in 2012, kicking 55 goals.

"I am really excited, it has been a bit of a whirlwind the last couple of months but I'm glad the decision has been made. I am rapt to start and get to know everyone," Newnes said.

"I think there are a lot of young players here and I've got a lot of experience so hopefully I'll be sharing a bit of knowledge about what it takes.

"I've got a lot of improvement in my game personally. I haven't yet reached the highest level I can, so I am really excited to push myself and push the group as well."

Carlton list boss Stephen Silvagni said Newnes was an elite runner and good user of the ball.

"We are looking forward to seeing Jack hitting the ground running once he commences pre-season in November," Silvagni said.

The Sydney Swans also swooped on the first day for de-listed free agent signings, securing former Port Adelaide forward Sam Gray and former Hawthorn key defender Kaiden Brand.

Gray played 96 games for the Power after joining as a rookie in 2013 while Bran played 43 games for the Hawks after being drafted in 2012.

“We’re excited about adding Sam and Kaiden to our squad and look forward to them continuing their careers at Sydney,” Swans footy boss Charlie Gardiner said.

“Sam and Kaiden have both shown an ability to perform at AFL level and we think they will both be great additions to our team.”

Gray, 27 and Brand, 25, join Lewis Taylor at the Swans as off-season acquisitions.

Meanwhile Port Adelaide have signed former Geelong tall Wylie Buzza on a one-year deal.

The versatile forward-ruck played eight games for the Cats but struggled for opportunities in 2019, and was delisted after the season.

The Power, who lost Paddy Ryder, Billy Frampton and Dougal Howard in the trade period, have pounced on Buzza to replace some of that tall timber.

Buzza, 23, kicked 32 goals in 17 VFL games in 2019, with the 199-centimetre Queenslander also spending time in the ruck.

"I really enjoyed my time at Geelong even though I didn't get the results and outcomes that I was hoping for, but I'm super excited to get another opportunity and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in," Buzza said.

"I see myself as an AFL-standard footballer and I think I can contribute to overall team success rather than just being a number on the list. I know I might not get the opportunities straight away but I'm confident I can be a contributor at AFL level.

"I feel like I'm at a really good age where I've still got a lot of development in front of me but I can still help people younger than me coming into the club as well.

"I'm learning a bit about the history of the club and to be there in its 150th year is going to be pretty special."
