‘Disgusting narrative’: Furious Wayne Carey unleashes on wine bar bathroom video

Wayne Carey has angrily responded after footage of him leaving a bathroom shortly after a woman at a popular wine bar in Melbourne was posted online.

The video shows a woman leaving the bathroom area of Toorak Cellars bar in Armadale and walking up some steps. Moments later, Carey is seen leaving the same area.

Carey then stops and makes a phone call while the women filming can be heard making comments such as “she looks embarrassed” and “what’s he doing in there?”

In a podcast with Sam Newman released on Wednesday, Carey criticised the women who filmed and posted the video online for creating a “made-up story”.

“These particular girls waited and premeditated [sic] for me to walk into a toilet… and they sat there and then made up a story about what occurred in those toilets,” he said.

Speaking on Newman’s You Cannot Be Serious podcast, Carey accused the women filming the video of slut-shaming.

Carey said he had consulted police, lawyers, and the AFL Players Association regarding the incident.

“We have people committing suicide on a weekly basis because of cowards like these two females,” he said.

“This is women picking on women. That’s all they were doing, they were slut-shaming another woman. If two men had done that, they would be raked over hot coals.”

Carey said he felt for the woman caught in the recording, describing her as an innocent bystander who has endured a “horrific few months”.

“She’s lost her parents, she’s split up from a partner and these two women think it’s OK to film her and slut-shame her online and post it online. What sort of penalty should these two women get?”

Carey also clarified on the podcast that the toilets were unisex.

In a post on X, the former AFL player said that the video had been posted online with a “disgusting narrative” and had the potential to ruin lives.

“Being filmed without consent coming out of a public bathroom and then filming a complete stranger within a minute coming out of that public bathroom is NOT OK,” he wrote.

“Then the persons who are filming adding their disgusting narrative and posting it on social media ruins lives… Enough.”

Nine’s Today is also reporting that the woman featured in the video has spoken out on social media.

“Shame on you women. We are better than that. It did not happen, but that’s not the point. It’s time the narrative changed,” she posted.

Carey also told the podcast he had consulted police, lawyers and the AFL Players Association, and that his partner Jessica Paulke and the woman involved in the video had joined forces to hold the two women who recorded the video accountable.

Wayne Carey has been contacted for comment.
