Carlton manager under investigation after staff complaints

By Sam McClure

A Carlton Football Club manager is facing an internal investigation after a number of complaints from staff.

A whistleblower, who works at the club, raised concerns with both Carlton and the AFL. The league immediately referred it to its integrity unit.

Two sources close to the situation, who are not permitted to speak publicly, confirmed the unit was aware of the situation and had initially consulted with the club.

They said the AFL was comfortable that Carlton was capable of dealing with the inquiry.

In response to questions from this masthead, Carlton confirmed on Wednesday night that it was dealing with a “management matter”.

“While the club is not in a position to provide commentary on individual employees, the club wants to make clear this matter is in no way related to any gender-based misconduct and any such insinuations are inaccurate and misleading,” the club said in a statement.

“The club’s first priority is, and always will be, its people and this is at the forefront on the club’s handling of this matter.”

The club said the manager had not been stood down but was on scheduled leave that coincided with the investigation.

It is another unwanted controversy for the Carlton, which is still reeling from the controversial departure of president Luke Sayers, following the revelation of a lewd image on social media.

The AFL would not comment when contacted.
