‘We’re glad to see the back of him’: Embattled Nicheliving director steps down from diplomat role

By Connor McGoverne

One of two directors of embattled building company Nicheliving Paul Bitdorf has resigned from his second role as the Polish Honorary Consulate in Perth – a position highly involved with the state’s political elite.

Queries made by 9 News Perth and WAtoday to the Republic of Poland Ministry of Foreign Affairs last month revealed officials were unaware of the controversy surrounding the embattled builder, and that Bitdorf had stepped down.

The Ministry confirmed on Wednesday his position was now vacant.

“We would like to inform you that Mr Paul Bitdorf, Honorary Consul of Poland in Perth has resigned from his position, and his resignation has been accepted,” the Republic of Poland Ministry of Foreign Affairs told this masthead.

“Therefore the operation of the Polish Honorary Consulate in Perth is suspended until the position of the Honorary Consul is filled again. We will notify you of any changes in this regard.”

Through his role, Bitdorf met with political bigwigs including then-Premier Mark McGowan and Opposition Leader Mia Davies, West Australian Governor Chris Dawson and Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas.

Nicheliving was forced to surrender its building license last month in exchange for the state government picking up the bill to finish around 200 homes.

He and fellow director Ronnie Michel-Elhaj were banned from reapplying or seeking registration as a building service contractor for 10 years.

Former Nicheliving customer and Poland resident Richard Hamilton said it was appropriate Bitdorf had stood down.

“As someone who has lived in Poland and speaks Polish, the people deserve better representation than from someone like him — we’re glad to see the back of him,” Hamilton said.

As of Wednesday morning, Bitdorf still had the position listed on his X account (formerly known as Twitter). He has been contacted for comment.
