Reports are flooding into the newsroom now of widespread disruption to multiple services across Perth including petrol pumps, banks, supermarkets and shopping centres and St John Urgent Care. Triple-zero and emergency services are not affected.
Karrinyup Shopping Centre worker Fleur says Eftpos machines are down.
“We’re open, but we can’t put any sales through,” she said.
“We’re putting things on hold and taking customer details, everyone has been pretty understanding.
“My manager says to just keep smiling.”
A Busselton Bunnings shopper reported Eftpos machines are down, with only one cash till operating. Customers have been given coffee vouchers as a thank-you for waiting.
Bendigo Bank says some online banking and transactions are impacted.
Customers entering Kmart in East Victoria Park are being told shopping is cash only as a precaution, though systems have been working intermittently.
Happily for those wondering if their buses and train stations will be operating this afternoon, Transperth says everything is A-OK.
And a reader reports that all was well this afternoon at an Australia Post outlet.
There’s no evidence to suggest the mass outage is a hack or cybersecurity incident, according to National Cyber Security Coordinator Michelle McGuinness.
“I am aware of a large-scale technical outage affecting a number of companies and services across Australia this afternoon,” McGuinness said in a statement on X.

A widespread Microsoft outage is affecting the nation’s supermarkets, banks, telecommunications companies and more.
The technical issue is thought to be related to Microsoft’s cloud services, which have already caused the grounding and cancellation of flights across the US.
Outage website Downdetector shows issues across NAB, Bendigo Bank, Telstra, CBA, Google and more.
Perth Airport has been impacted, with check-ins now being done manually. There may be some delays to departures, a spokeswoman says.
Water Corporation has also been affected.
Along St Georges Terrace, NAB and BankWest ATMs are operating. Woolworths is doing a busy trade, but a third of its 27 self checkouts are closed, displaying the dreaded blue screen.
Microsoft has been contacted for comment.
South Fremantle Football Club will host a tribute round honouring player Nick Campo, the 18-year-old who died when a car driven by his friend crashed in North Perth over the weekend.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the club wrote they had been working with players, coaches, welfare resources and the wider football community to discuss the team’s ability to play in Saturday’s round.
“The Campo Family and our Colts Squad have communicated a strong desire for the game to proceed, in tribute to Nick and in support of teammate Tyler Rowe, who is still fighting in hospital,” the statement read.
“Following all available welfare advice and with our player’s strong desire to honour their mate at the forefront of our decision, the South Fremantle vs. Subiaco Colts game will proceed.
“Our priority remains our players, staff & families involved in this terrible tragedy, and as such, we fully support taking the field tomorrow.”
The Colts and Reserves games will be brought forward to 9.00am and 11.40am respectively, to allow for a moment’s silence before each game.
Nick’s parents Daniel and Bianca Campo have urged people to call out young drivers for reckless behaviour, and will launch a campaign called “Call out for Nick”
They are hoping for public speaking opportunities, particularly with sporting clubs, to speak directly to young drivers about the impact of not driving safely.
A former WA deputy mayor and hotelier will spend at least two years and nine months behind bars for stealing millions of dollars from a non-profit group.
Thomas Graham Greenaway, 73, who was deputy mayor in Geraldton, was convicted of 33 counts of stealing money and property from the Yugunga-Nya Aboriginal charitable trust while he was a trustee.
Greenaway stole nearly $3 million between 2013 and 2017, with more than $2 million used to prop up his failing business, the Freemason’s Hotel.
During sentencing, Judge Michael Bowden said Greenaway had stolen from vulnerable people.
“They trusted you and you clearly breached that trust,” he said.
“Whether you thought that because of the royalties that they were receiving increased from some $72,000 to around about $3.8 million and they had plenty of money, I don’t know, but certainly, you took money away from people who were entitled it.
“When you look at your conduct, it was deliberately dishonest over a long period of time.”
Judge Bowden acknowledged Greenaway had returned about $700,000 to the trust and ordered him to repay the remainder.
The discretionary trust was set up to help those suffering from poverty and sickness and to boost education and culture.

The latest Metronet project plans are out for public consultation, after the Yanchep railway line officially opened to the public last weekend.
Development WA has opened the floor to the community on the proposed East High Wycombe Structure Plan, which will be aimed at forming a gateway between the city, airport and Perth Hills.
The draft plan includes increasing residential density and the development of a main street around the train station, a community hub, neighbourhood centre and local open space.
Metronet is the Labor government’s flagship program, but has copped criticism over timeframe and cost blowouts.
In the latest state budget, a further $700 million was allocated to the project, taking the total cost of the network to around $11.5 billion.
The project is also far different to what was initially spruiked when plans were announced in 2013.
The East High Wycombe Structure Plan will be open for comment until August 9.

Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas has responded to the state government’s less than enthusiastic reception of his council’s plans for a $1 billion riverfront redevelopment.
Speaking to Gary Adshead on 6PR, Zempilas said the feedback he had received from the community since the announcement on Wednesday had been overwhelmingly positive, but admitted there had been a more mixed reaction for residents along Terrace Road – right next to where the proposed redevelopment would take place.

The plans were spruiked as Perth’s version of Brisbane’s South Bank and would cover a 2.2-kilometre stretch along the Swan River from East Perth to the Supreme Court Gardens, including Langley Park.
But Environment Minister Reece Whitby questioned if the announcement was part of Zempilas’ plans to join the WA Liberal Party.
Zempilas said he was disappointed by that outlook, describing his comments as “tired old lines from a tired old state government, who don’t want to progress anything, if it doesn’t suit them.”
“I have come to expect this from this state government who appears to be just negative unless it’s something they’ve come up with,” he said.
“We’ve been waiting a long time to better utilise our river and Langley Park and here is a masterplan that pushes us forward.
“That’s why, to be perfectly honest, I’m disappointed that the state government’s immediate reaction was to politicise this.”
Some big news for WA fans of speedway – an international race will be held in Perth this December, with the biggest prize money in Australian history up for grabs.
High Limit Racing will host the event at the Perth Motorplex, with $100,000 awarded to the winner on each of the three nights.

Perth Motorplex general manager Gavin Mirgo spoke with Millsy and Karl on 6PR on Friday morning and said while the prize money was fantastic the biggest news was that American driver Kyle Larson was taking part.
He described him as the biggest name in American motorsports. He is also the co-owner of High Limit Racing.
“So far, there are six high rollers from the US that are committed, and there’s many, many more that we’ve been in discussion with to come and race for this weekend,” Mirgo said.
“We’re blessed with great weather at that time of the year – there’s no better place to be than in Western Australia around that Christmas and New Year period.”
The race will be held between December 28 and 30.
To some crime news and two men have been charged over a shooting in the state’s South West on Sunday, which left a man hospitalised with serious injuries.
Around 8.15am on July 14, police received information regarding a man being shot in Clifton Street in Collie.
The man – aged in his 30s – received gunshot wounds to both his hands and attended Collie Hospital.
Following inquiries, Bunbury detectives charged a 21-year-old from Collie and a 34-year-old from Australind, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm or prevent arrest attempted to strike any person with a projectile.
Both men are due to appear in Bunbury Magistrates Court today.
Detectives wish to speak to anyone with any information relating to this incident, or who saw a black Holden Caprice sedan in Collie on the evening of July 13, or in the early hours of Sunday.
