Teen charged over fatal North Lake crash in horror weekend on WA roads
A WA teenager has been charged with dangerous driving offences after a crash that killed an 18-year-old man and injured several others in Perth’s south on Saturday.
WA Police say about 11.40pm in North Lake, a white Toyota Hilux utility vehicle was travelling south-east on Farrington Road when it crashed, rolled and collided with a black Jeep Patriot SUV, which was travelling west on Farrington Road.
“An 18-year-old male rear passenger of the Toyota died at the scene,” police said in a statement.
“The 17-year-old male driver and three other male passengers of the Toyota – one aged 17 and two aged 18 – were taken to Royal Perth Hospital by St John WA for treatment of various injuries.
“The 26-year-old male driver and 27-year-old female passenger of the Jeep were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital by St John WA with minor injuries.”
On Sunday, police confirmed a 17-year-old boy had been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (three counts) and dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm (two counts). He is due to appear in the Perth Children’s Court on Monday.
Premier Roger Cook said on Sunday that the accident “sounds horrific” and that it was “another reminder for all of us to be safe when you’re on the road, to take extra care”.
“I’ve got very scarce details in relation to that accident, but … I understand it’s subject to a car rollover, which also impacted on another vehicle,” he said.
“We just want you to be with your loved ones at the end of your journey and it’s incredibly sad.
“I also understand that the police are really working hard to piece together the details of this accident so anyone who may have been a witness or have dashcam vision in relation to that incident please contact the police.”
The fatal crash was not the only tragedy on WA roads this weekend.
A 62-year-old man was killed in Jurien Bay on Sunday morning after his Ford Falcon utility left the road and crashed on Indian Ocean Drive, near Middleton Boulevard.
A 73-year-old man died on Saturday when his Holden Colorado dual-cab utility struck a tree in Howatharra, between Geraldton and Northampton.
Also on Saturday, a 39-year-old man died in a motorcycle crash in Flint on Metro Road, about 4.5 kilometres south of the Brookton Highway intersection.
