Chopper films alleged 170km/h Ferrari-Porsche race on Perth streets

By Rebecca Peppiatt

A Ferrari, a Porsche and a Yamaha motorcycle have been impounded with three men accused of racing through Trigg, allegedly reaching speeds of almost 170km/h.

WA Police said two men, both aged 34, from Bullsbrook and Ocean Reef, were seen by members of the public in a red Ferrari Spider and a blue Porsche 911 in Sorrento about 9.30am Sunday, June 23.

Officers on the ground made contact with Police Air Wing, which located the vehicles travelling south on West Coast Drive towards Trigg.

Police allege the two cars then raced each other from the intersection of Karrinyup Road and West Coast Highway until they reached the traffic lights at the intersection of West Coast Highway and The Boulevard in City Beach.

They allege the Ferrari reached speeds of 167km/h in an 80km/h zone, and 133km/h in a 70km/h zone; and allege that the Porsche reached 169km/h in an 80km/h zone, and 133km/h in a 70km/h zone.

Police also claim that at the traffic lights a 23-year-old Sorrento man on a black Yamaha motorcycle joined in the alleged race, reaching an alleged speed of 119km/h, and that all three vehicles drove recklessly, racing each other, until they stopped outside a restaurant on Challenger Parade, City Beach.

The 23-year-old did not have a current driver’s license, police allege.

All three were charged with reckless driving and had their vehicles impounded.

Road Policing Command Mike Peters said it was “astounding” that some people were willing to risk their lives and the safety of others by allegedly driving recklessly.

“Driving a high-performance vehicle doesn’t excuse you from any traffic laws,” he said.

“It’s not worth driving in a reckless manner at the risk of incurring a speeding infringement, or at worse, costing your life or the life of another person”.

Two of the men will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday, with the third to appear next Friday.
