Cold case detectives have charged a 58-year-old man with the murder of an elderly man and his sister more than 30 years ago.
Doris McCartney and Ronald Swann were found dead in their Moorabbin home on October 22, 1989. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing had been taken.
Last week, Victoria Police offered a $1 million reward for information, and on Thursday Glen William Nash was arrested in Rowville, in Melbourne’s south-east.
Detectives from the homicide squad charged him with two counts of murder.
Mr Nash appeared via video link at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday where he was remanded in custody.
His lawyer Neville Rudston told the court that his client was battling several health complaints, including mental health issues.
Ms McCartney, 71, and Mr Swann, 69, lived together at the Keith Street home.
Inspector Tim Day last week pleaded for anyone with information to come forward.
“I’m asking anyone out there who does have information about Doris and Ronald’s death, no matter what that information might be, to please come forward and speak to police,” he said.
“It is no less than their family deserves after all this time.”
Ms McCartney’s son Ian told Nine News last month he thought about their deaths every day.
“There’s not a day in 31 years that I haven’t thought about it,” he said.
“Sometimes it’s hours, other times it might be five minutes.”
The date for a committal mention was set for July 1.
