From war-torn Ukraine to devastating floods that continue to affect Australia, Herald photographers have captured and documented many of the historic events and moments of the past year. Before you leap into 2023, look back at some of the key moments that defined 2022 through the lens of our award-wining photography.

Ukrainian soldier Oleh Nazarov, 51, who sustained head, neck and back injuries during a grenade attack on his trench, awaits a transfer at a medical stabilisation point in Bakhmut, Ukraine. Oleh has served in the Ukraine military since 2015, initially in the Donbas war, and was badly injured in 2018. After two years of recovery he went back on active duty.

The horse was taken back to town in the back of their ute. The rangers then found a paralysis tick, which was removed. After debate on the horse's future, the owner was found and decided to care for it. Days later word was sent back that the horse was up and walking again.
