Two crashes in an hour, as car falls off back of truck, and five others pile-up

Roads have cleared after two accidents on the Gateway Motorway and Deagon Deviation within the span of an hour – including a car falling off a truck– brought southbound traffic into the Brisbane CBD to a standstill.

Just after 7am on Friday, two trucks collided near the Sandgate Road overpass at Boondall.

Shortly after 8.20am, there was a five-car pile-up on the Deagon Deviation at Brighton.

Police closed four lanes on the Gateway Motorway after the trucks crashed, which were reopened after several hours.

At 9am a traffic alert was issued for Brisbane commuters, which was no longer active at 10.30am after on-site crews said traffic was flowing.

The trucks’ collision caused congestion spanning multiple suburbs up to Northgate.

A car fell from the back of one of the trucks during the crash, but police said no motorists were injured.

Emergency services said initial reports described a four-car crash at the Deagon Deviation, but on-scene crews reported a “five-vehicle crash nose-to-tail”.

The two truck drivers were assessed and found stable by paramedics on the scene, and both drivers refused more treatment.

Paramedics assessed eight people at Brighton, and police reported no injuries, although one patient was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.
