Investigations launched into two motel fires across south-east

By Catherine Strohfeldt

Investigations are under way into two motel fires in south-east Queensland early on Sunday – one in Moorooka, the other in Toowoomba.

Fire crews were called to a motel on Ipswich Road, Moorooka, at 8.13am on Sunday with reports of a blaze in a ground-floor unit.

The Queensland Fire Department said the unit was “well involved in fire” when crews arrived about 8.20am.

Emergency services were called shortly after 8am on Sunday to a fire in Brisbane’s south.

Paramedics treated a man in his 30s for life-threatening burns to his arms and upper back before taking him to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Firefighters took about 10 minutes to control the blaze, the cause of which is being investigated.

Hours earlier, emergency services were called to a motel fire on Boundary Street in Cotswold Hills, Toowoomba.

Police said the motel’s guests had evacuated when crews arrived shortly after 1.30am.

The Queensland Fire Department said the blaze was contained to “just the one room” and was out by 2.20am.

Six people were assessed for smoke inhalation, and a 34-year-old woman was taken in a stable condition to Toowoomba Hospital for observation.

“We’ve got a fire investigator attending, but it looks like [the] Queensland Police Service declared it a crime scene, so they’re also involved in that investigation,” a QFD spokeswoman said.

Police said the “suspicious” fire had caused significant damage, with investigations into its cause continuing.
