Three people have been killed and one man with a gunshot wound has survived a shooting at a remote property in north Queensland.

Police are still hunting the killer or killers through remote bushland in grazing country now subject to an emergency exclusion zone.

The survivor was able to travel kilometres to raise the alarm at a homestead in remote Bogie, north of Mackay, to call for help.

The man is fighting for life in hospital and undergoing emergency surgery after he was flown by RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter to Mackay Base Hospital about 11am.

Police said the four people were believed to be family members but officers were yet to formally identify the bodies.

An emergency declaration about 11.30am was revoked and a new zone established on Shannonvale Road just after 2.30pm.

Mackay District Superintendent Tom Armitt told the media the “killer or killers” were still at large, in an area he described as remote, hilly and heavily forested.

Armitt said the survivor had travelled “many, many kilometres” to raise the alarm and police had since found bodies at the scene of the crime.

“Originally, when the male person spoke to us, he was obviously in a distressed state,” he said when asked about the change in the emergency declaration zone.

“There was some confusion about where the shooting had occurred.

“We do not know who is responsible.

“No indication has been given to us as to why this has occurred.”

Police and paramedics took about an hour to arrive at the cattle station after being called about 9am on Thursday.

Police made the initial emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act with boundaries encompassing Sutherland Road, Normanby Road, Mount Compton Road and Starvation Creek.

According to the most recent census, Bogie has 207 people, almost two-thirds of them men.

The nearest major employer is the Glencore mine at Collinsville.

A police spokeswoman said the initial call was reported as “shots being fired” and a “male was shot in the stomach”.
