Abandoned Brisbane shipyard to become riverside cabaret venue
The Pink Flamingo Spiegeland is set to breathe life into an old shipyard in Hamilton, transforming the area from an abandoned dock to a go-to place for dance, acrobatics and cabaret style shows.
The business, which had established itself as a tourist attraction on the Gold Coast in 2019, is expanding by opening its doors in Brisbane on December 14 with a 400-seat, purpose-built Spiegel Pavilion that will remain for seven years as part of the regeneration of the area ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
There will no longer be a need to drive to the Gold Coast for night out to watch their popular shows, with the venue settling into the riverside.
Brisbane director Peter Snee said they were fortunate to win a tender from the Queensland government to revamp the area ahead of the games.
“The decision to have a Brisbane venue was born out of the success of our Gold Coast venue,” he said. “A lot of time and attention has come into it.
“This area is also where the future athletes will be during the Olympics, so we’re very proud to be part of this process to ring this area to life.”
The venue, which will create 150 jobs across theatre and hospitality, will be home to popular productions Suavé, La Teaze and Ripped, with eight performances each week.
“We’ve got open arms for Brisbane and there’s something for everyone,” Snee said.
“It’s a unique style of entertainment. You get the charm of cabaret and circus without sitting on uncomfortable seats or having a drinking cup in between your legs during a show. It’s a very theatre-style environment with luxurious seating.”
Snee said those who would normally drive to the Gold Coast for a night out could still do so as both venues would both have their popular shows while also different productions to enjoy.
“They say if it’s not broke, don’t fix it, but given the Brisbane venue will be twice the size as the Gold Coast one, we might have bigger shows and acts to play with,” he said.
