Two teenagers charged with drug supply at under-18s music festival
By Matt Bungard
Two teenagers were charged with supplying drugs at under-18s music festival Lost City on Saturday night, while 14 others were found to have illegal substances.
A 14-year-old girl from Mt Druitt was allegedly found with 31 MDMA capsules. She was granted bail to appear at a children's court in April.
Police also charged a 17-year-old boy from Wangi Wangi, who was allegedly found with 75 MDMA capsules. He was also charged with resisting arrest and possessing a knife.
The crowd of roughly 12,000 13- to 17-year-olds were almost universally well-behaved, with just 27 ejections for intoxication, drug-related matters and anti-social behaviour.
There were concerns from parents in the lead-up to the festival about excessive or heavy-handed security in the wake of growing public concern about the number of potentially illegal searches and strip searches being carried out on young people.
Last week, the Herald reported that internal NSW Police quotas called for nearly a quarter of a million drug searches to be carried out each year.
Almost 90 per cent of those searches found nothing, prompting concerns it is leading to an abuse of powers to meet targets.
NSW Police said on Sunday that a private contractor, engaged by the event organisers, conducted drug and alcohol testing at the festival as part of the overall safety strategy.
On Saturday night, it was estimated that a fifth of the patrons could be subjected to a variety of drug testing methods including tongue swipes and breathalysers.
Police worked with event organisers but say they did not conduct drug or alcohol testing themselves. The high-visibility police presence lasted for six and a half hours, from 3.30pm to 10pm.
The Lost City festival will take place again next weekend in Brisbane.
