Police are investigating whether speed was a factor in a car crash that killed a teenage boy and sparked a fire in Sydney’s south-west late on Friday night.

Witnesses hailed emergency services to the crash site about 11.30pm after the 17-year-old driver lost control of his Mitsubishi EVO and slammed into a guardrail on the M5 in Revesby, causing the vehicle to catch alight.

Paramedics were called to the crash in Revesby but said the driver died at the scene.

The fire ignited nearby grass and trees and the NSW Rural Fire Service was called to extinguish the small blaze in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Paramedics said the driver died at the scene. No other people were in the car.

Police closed eastbound lanes and established a crime scene that forensic investigators examined overnight.

Police have called for witnesses and those who may have captured the incident on dashcam footage to come forward to help establish the circumstances of the deadly crash.

Investigators are preparing a report for the coroner.

Separately, another young man died overnight in Maitland after he lost control of his motorbike while rounding a bend. He was thrown from his seat and collided with a tree.

Police attended the scene in Thornton, north-west of Newcastle, after emergency calls alerted authorities to the crash just after midnight.

Paramedics treated the 26-year-old driver, but he died at the scene.
